Food Hunting at Myeongdong Street Food

On the first night upon my arrival at Seoul, I decided to go eat some Myeongdong street food which located at Myeongdong shopping street which is the most popular street food in Seoul to try the some Korean Street Food. The distance from my hostel Dongdaemun to Myeongdong is fairly near. It takes just 5-10 minutes with subway to get there.

Myeongdong Street Food

After walking around 2-3 minutes from Myeongdong station, we found there were so many street food stalls. It was very cold at that time. The winter weather was around minus 5 Celcius and I had difficulty to adjust myself with the cold itself as I came from tropical country with hot weather.

Myeongdong Toppoki
Myeongdong Toppoki

The first Myeongdong street food that I ate at Myeongdong shopping street was the Toppoki ( hot and spicy rice cake). The Toppoki was served also along with Twigim (vegetables tempura). It tasted a bit sweet,middle-level spicy and salty with chewy a bit sticky texture at the same time but it was good.

The mixture of many flavors. At first I didn’t get used to it but I can accept the taste at last. Usually Toppoki sellers also sell Odeng/Eomuk along with free hot soup offered to make buyers feel warm at cold weather. The Seoul Odeng or Eomuk only cost around 1,000 to 2,000 Won for one skewer.

You can also find the potato tornado stalls at the middle of the Myeongdong market which is very unique. It has the salty potato tastes and famous around Myeongdong night market

Myeongdong restaurants and street food stall are spreaded around the street to offer foods for hungry tourists. Choices are so many that will make people confused. There were some korean bbq seoul, sulbing myeongdong, etc

The street foods also attract worldwide tourists to come here to try.The food price here is different from one stall to another stall. The cheapest food cost 2,000 Won until some food may cost 5,000 to 15,000 Won (for grilled lobster).

I captured some photographs from the Myeongdong street food stalls. All the sellers here were very friendly except there was one seller here who voiced her objection to get her picture when cooking by saying “Please,no photograph”. So I respect her and decide to quit taking her picture.

Myeongdong Pumpkin Soup

I try some foods here. Foods were hot, tasty and freshly prepared well. I bought fish cake roll with tomato sauce, grilled scallop, Gyeran-Bbang/Egg Steamed Bread,Tteok-bokki(Toppoki) and fried vegetables, pomegranate juice, and also Ttaek-Galbi meat balls with special sauce.

Myeongdong Fish Cake Roll

I thought the Pomegranate juice was a bit overpriced, It cost around 5,000 Won, but because at time I was so thirsty after eating so many foods here, I didn’t think twice to buy the drink.

The last food that I purchased here was the famous self service long tall ice cream twist cone that only cost 2,000 Won with many flavor available. The ice cream tasted good. It was worth to try with affordable price and unique experience eating such tall height ice cream.LOL..

Myeongdong Tteok-Galbi Meatball

The Tteok-Galbi meatball tasted very yummy. The seller told me they had special sauce that was very delicious. I spread lot of the sauce into my meatball. After tasted that it was very good, I came back again to the stall to ask for additional sauce, the seller smiled at me and told me please just go ahead to put the sauce. I was shy a bit but thankful to the seller.

There was also a cute strawberry mochi stall here. The mochi packaging was very lovely and eye-catchy. The mochi price also very average.

Myeongdong Strawberry Mochi

Myeongdong was very crowded with tourists although time showed it was almost midnight already. Not only food hunters that hang around here but also pretty ladies who looked for beauty cosmetics as Myeongdong shopping street also fulled of many famous brand cosmetics stores such as Etude, TonyMoly, Innisfree, and many more other branded cosmetics

Myeongdong Egg Steamed Bread

The egg steamed bread/Gyeran-Bbang was very worth to give a try. It only cost 2,000 Won. The bread tasted sweet, creamy and fluffy texture with soft and moist egg yolk. I was eating my egg bun while enjoying my walk along Myeongdong shopping street with my eyes crawling the sight of many beauty products here. The egg bread would cause serious addiction during the cold weather.

Direction to enjoy Myeongdong street foods: Just stop at Myeong-dong Station (which is subway line 4) then exit 8.

Incheon Airport Transportation

Airport transfer to Seoul city is very convenient with Arex Seoul. It was an express train which directly go to the city. And cost around 8000-10000 won per person.

But because of I was very tired at the time, I decided just go by Airport Limousine Bus which directly stop infront of my hostel. The bus ticket cost 14000 Won to Dongdaemun Toyoko-Inn bus stop. It was a little bit expensive compare to Arex Seoul train but it worth the trip.

Incheon Airport Bus

For airport transportation from Seoul Airport to my hostel, I took airport shuttle Number 6001. The bus was fast and clean and very convenient.

The driver (a young man wore glasses) was very kind, he helped people to carry out heavy baggages and make sure nobody miss the bus stop by screaming all the bus stop names several times over and over again.

What a great service!!! ^_^

Annyeonghaseyo, Seoul! I’m coming …

Chenggyecheon Stream

Hi everybody Annyeonghaseyo, this is the first post of my Seoul travel guide. (。◕‿  ◕。)

Stepping my feet on Seoul land has always been my dream since my high school time.
I remember exactly there were many popular Korean dramas such as “Winter Sonata” by Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo or “Autumn in My Heart (Endless Love)” by Song Hye Kyo, Song Seung Heon and Won Bin.And now the latest one was “Descendants of the Sun” by Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo that became a very popular hot worldwide in many countries, including my country.

Many Korean dramas drove people to what is called “Hallyu-Wave” that attract visitors to travel to Korea directly or indirectly. ●‿  ●

Applying for South Korea VISA

There are so many travel places to go in Seoul. But, I have a dilemma whether to go by myself or to join a tour by famous tour agent. Many people cry their eyes out over Korea VISA that cannot get approval. Meanwhile if people visit Korea by joining a tour agent and got group visa will have no worry over visa matter and they will bring us to many popular places in Seoul Korea.

After thought for several days, I decide to apply for single entry South Korea VISA and convinced myself that I will go without joining any tour agent although I don’t understand Korean words at all. I only know a few simple words from Korean drama.  (◡‿   ◡✿)

Many friends and family shock for my decision but I explain to them not to worry as I believe Seoul is a safe country for tourist although I don’t speak Korean language. I personally don’t really like to join a tour because it is too time consuming.

After three weeks, I checked the status of my South Korean VISA application on the South Korea embassy website by entering my personal information on the required field. And tadaaa my VISA has been approved! I felt really happy because my dream became true

Check Visa Status Via Website

I would step my feet on South Korea soon. Horrayyyy!!! ∩(︶▽︶)∩

After noticed of that good news, I prepare to set my south korea itinerary. The flight was on February so the weather at Seoul was still winter. Because it was still winter, I have problem with my carry-on baggage as I brought many winter coats that weight very heavy. My carry-on baggage was almost exceed the 7kg limit policy and got fine by airlines company!!

The one downside from traveling at winter time is that winter coat really take all the baggage space and the scarf, gloves and boots also so heavy. But I love Seoul sightseeing on winter so I forget about all the burden. (¤﹏¤)

Traveling day was coming!

I cannot be more happy on this day because the next morning I would be arrived at Seoul. I proceed to the airport for check in earlier but my flight was delayed for around 45 minutes from my local city to Kuala Lumpur because of some technical problem. I was so worry that it would affect my flight to Seoul because I had only two hours transit time on the KLIA2 before next flight to Seoul.

On the plane, I ordered some meal as I really got hungry because  I haven’t took my dinner yet. So, I decided to order Caramel Cookie Bar from Air Asia flight.

That was really YUMMY!! (。◕‿  ◕。) Soft and so tasty!

Caramel Cookie Bar

 Arriving at KLIA2 Airport

After one hour of flight, I arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2, and have only one hour and twenty minutes transit time. So I decided to have some fast food at Popeye Fried Chicken at international flight arrivals before next flight. Because the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Incheon International Airport will took around six hours and it would be a perfect time to sleep on the airplane.

Popeyes Fried Chicken

After having the foods, I proceed to the Gate L22 for next flight. On the way to the gate, there was an announcement from sound system that they would close the gate soon. What???? I thought I heard a wrong announcement so I asked a woman at counter. She told me I should run as fast as I can because I might miss my flights to korea

So, I run all the way to the airplane with heavy breathe as fast as I can..

International Departures at KLIA2

And finally Thanks,God! I didn’t miss my flight.. Fiuhhhh…. (¬_¬)

Before arriving Seoul, at flight, we will be asked by flight attendant to fill in the Traveler Declaration Form. I was asleep at the time she gave everybody this form. After I awake, I saw passengers beside me fill this form so I called her and asked for this form.

Travel Declaration Form

Arriving at Incheon International Airport

After filled up the travel declaration form, the airplane captain announced that we will be landed at Incheon International Airport in around 15 minutes and told us that the local weather on Incheon is around 1° Celcius with a chance of rain and snow. I was very happy to hear that because I never see any snow on my country. I can’t wait to see South Korea in winter.

And finally I was arrived at Incheon International Airport. A little bit disappointed that it is rain and the snow is not so visible but still pretty cool. huh..

Quick Tips for Korean Visa:

For some people that want to visit Korea but cannot get South Korea Visa, there is still another alternative to go. Jeju Island (South Korea) has apply free entry visa for 187 countries as an effort to promote Jeju Island as destination for international tourists.

For travelers from countries that do not have flight directly to Jeju (such as from South East Asia countries), there might be a little difficulty as almost all flights go thru Incheon Airport Seoul that require visa, although only transit. A solution for this matter can be handled by flight from HongKong to Jeju. Cathay Pacific has HongKong-Jeju flight route 3 times a week.Travelers can go to Jeju by transit via HongKong or Bangkok.
